Mary Walsingham Crean manuscript, circa 1881-1885.

Manuscript of an essay written by Mary Walsingham Crean titled "Is he knave or fool--this Mr. Wilde?" concerning Oscar Wilde's lecture tour of America in 1881. In the essay Crean condemns what she views as Wilde's hedonistic aestheticism and morally adrift elitism and defends her fellow countrymen against his insinuations that they are coarse, vulgar philistines. The essay includes an anecdote concerning a reporter who visited Wilde in his hotel rooms during his stay in New Orleans, La., and found him "lolling on a sofa sniffing cologne."
